Studying abroad especially for tertiary education has been embraced by many. Despite the high financial commitment involved, many parents want their children to be enrolled in foreign schools.
I interviewed some of them and these are the reasons why they patronize foreign school instead of those resident within their country.
1. Search for a better education
They claim that our educational institutions has deteriorated with no sight of improvement, hence the quest for a better education, made them to seek abroad study. It was reported that the standard of education in Nigeria is very low. Most of the schools lack educational infrastructures, and seasoned dedicated lecturers are hard to find.
2. It offers a greater chance of employment. It is reported that students who study abroad easily get lucrative jobs than those who study at our home country. Most of the employers give preference to candidates with degree from foreign schools. They believe that they are more equipped for the job considering the high standard of education in developed countries.
3. An opportunity to be diverse In culture.
While Studying abroad the students are exposed to different cultures- foods, clothing, lifestyle, value system and others. This they say makes them diverse and more exposed. This quality aids them in appreciating people from other cultures and in problem solving.
4. Get international connection
While at school, they relate with students and lecturers from other countries. Most of these relationships continue after graduation and can be very profitable in business and career purpose.
5. Learn new Language
It offers the opportunity to meet people with different foreign language and they might end up learning it. Ability to communicate in other foreign language is appreciated by international recruiters as it makes one's career more successful as an international staff. For example if you can communicate in French, working in francophone countries will be made easier.
6. Admirable Life experience
Visiting those developed countries is the desire of many, and many never fulfill this dream in their life time. So through abroad studies, these students are privileged to experience the wonders of creatures and tourism sites in those countries. This is a dream come true for many!
7. Develop new skills
There they can come across new skills which are not developed in their home countries . Among this may include sports such, swimming, basketball, snow skying, golf. You are also going to experience different types of movies, clubing, music etc.
They kept listing the reasons to support their quest for abroad study until I said "it is okay, I have heard enough!"
You have seen it all! What then can we say? I can say that if you can afford it, then you can opt for it.
