Although there are other places in which reading can be done with little or no distraction but some students still read in their rooms. Reading in the room is faced with many challenges and distractions. The temptation to sleep, the disturbance from roommates and visiting friends, the sounds of music and others affect the reading. If you have no other choice than to read in the room, you can reduce distraction by following these tips.
(1) Do not lie on the bed.
This is the easiest way to sleep off, so if you really want to read, please get a comfortable reading chair and desk. Remember education is not that easy! You will only be wondering what happened when you woke up to start looking for your book - this happens when you lie on the bed to read.
(2) Stay off your phone.
Yes, unlike the library where the use of phone is regulated, you are responsible for it while in the room. It is no doubt that the phone can cause enough distraction - from incoming calls, text messages, WhatsApp and Facebook message notifications and others. How can you concentrate in the midst of these? So, it is better to put it off or on silent mode and attend to the missed call(s)" or text message(s) later.
(3) Don't disclose your presence.
You can be inside and keep the door locked. Avoid any thing that will announce your presence such as music. This will keep those that will be parading the room up and down, away. some of them are only coming to discuss politics, football or rumors. I guess that is not your aim at that moment.
(3) Do not join in unnecessary discussion and argument.
It is in the hostel, you will hear fellow students discussing on captivating topic, you may be tempted to contribute but this will lead to a long argument and the study time will be waisted, so avoid such gathering.
(4) Read silently.
Reading out loud announces your presence and attracts other students who may distract you. Also it is noisy to your fellow room mate(s). How will feel when you are reading and somebody is talking loudly? Doesn't it affect your concentration? I guess it does! So if do read out loud before, please practice reading silently. Remember both achieve the same goal.
(5) Don't have your girlfriend around.
What kind of reading can you be doing with you and your girlfriend locked up in the room? To those that have their friends visit their hostel,
please your reading time is not good for such visit. You may end up doing what you never planned for.
Have a good reading time!
