Sleep is like an enemy to the reading of some students. The desire to read most times is thwarted by sleep. The book is often turned to pillow, as the student dozes off, only to wake up annoyed and disappointed. Oh no! how can I get rid of this time robbing sleep? - the student complains. Below are the ways a student can avoid sleep while reading:
(1) Sit appropriately and use a desk.
Lying down or seating so relaxed can enhance sleep. The student should sit erect with a suitable table. Most
students who lie on their bed reading, only wake up to find the book on the floor. Yes, it has fallen off their hands with out them knowing - '' that is the work of sleep."
(2) Avoid heavy meal.
Why won't you sleep, after filling your stomach to the brim with a bowl of beans or eba. Some foods makes you heavy and easily cause sleep. Light food such as snacks, soft drinks, rice, etc can be taken. The student should also reduce the quantity of food taken so as to be alert.
(3) Keep room temperature moderate.
Cool environment promotes sleep, the reading room should be kept moderately warm. The use of A/C should be controlled.
(4) Do not sit close to a table fan.
Sitting close to a table fan, can cause you to sleep off while reading. If it should be used, keep it far from you or alternatively use ceiling fan.
(5) Use Caffeine.
This can be taken to check sleep while reading. It should not be taken more than 3 cups per day, as excess of it is dangerous to the body.
(6) Maintain a healthy sleep life. You can't cheat nature. If you're starved of sleep, it will come calling when you are reading. An adult needs 7-9 hrs of sleep daily, while teens needs 9hrs.
(7) Take a walk.
While reading and you envisaged sleep coming, you can take a walk around. This works well! You can even be memorizing what your reading while doing this.
(8) Drink more water.
Water give you some strength and aids your digestion. Therefore taking some cups of water helps your reading.
(9) Read out loud.
Reading out loud help to keep you alert and awake. So if sleep is disturbing your reading time, try reading out loud.
(10) Study in groups.
Studying in groups create an Avenue for sharing ideas and this makes sleep far from you.
(11) Take a short nap.
Having about 20mins nap, releases more energy and refreshening for other activities like reading.
(12) Change to a more interesting course.
Sleep comes faster when you are reading a difficult course. This is because your interest on it is low, so you can switch to an interesting one at that moment. You can revert when the sleep has left.
