cultism has waisted the destiny of many students in the the tertiary institutions. It has claimed the life of many promising students. The tertiary institutions have witnessed the emergence of different cult groups, among which are Bukania, sea pirates, black axe, Aye. These groups often engage in deadly combat between themselves in contest for Dominion and supremacy. Cultists have no mercy and they always fight to revenge any arm done to group members. This has fueled and sustained constant clashes.
The activities of these groups are mainly criminal in nature, they engage in the harassment of lecturers and fellow students, rape, armed robbery, thuggery and other antisocial vices . What is the benefit of cultism? I guess your answer is ''none".
History has it that, the introduction of cultism by Professor Wole Soyinka into the Nigerian tertiary institutions was to fight a nole cause, but this has been hijacked by criminally minded fellows and today it has become a threat to life in our schools. Students are coerced to join through rigorous and dangerous initiation process, during which, the new converts are thoroughly beaten, and the female raped severely. Some die in the process. This journey they claim, makes them heartless, with little or no human sympathy, hence can kill and main without remorse.
This evil virus-cultism, has also crept into the society. It has rendered many communities war torn and devastated, through series of violence and
killings.
The tertiary institutions have been worst hit, several reported cases of death, disruption of school calendar and break down of law and order in the campus. Great concern and effort has been made to put a stop to cultism. Many students involved have been arrested and expelled. Many also have openly renounced the act.
Despite this, it is sad to note that the war against cultism in our tertiary institutions has not been totally won. The school authority should not rest on the oars. More should be done to curb this menace.
Schools should enlighten new students on the dangers of cultism and ensure they make a commitment in writing that they won't participate.
The security agencies should improve their intelligence network within and around the campus. this will enable them to nab those involved. Also students found guilty of cultism should be given severe punishment to serve as deterrent to others.
Cultism should be wholesomely condemned by all, and those sponsoring them should be brought to book. Enough of shedding innocent blood, enough of waiting great destinies, let us work together and save our tertiary institutions from cultism.
