The post University matriculation examination (post Ume) is an examination organized by Nigerian tertiary institutions to screen successful jambite before offering them admission. Although Jamb is the only body assigned with the responsibility of screening students for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions, the emergence of Post Ume has duplicated this function. The question many ask is why set up another body to carry out the same job meant for Jamb.
The tertiary institutions in defense of their action has faulted the integrity and transparency in the conduct of Jamb. they alleges gross misconduct, examination malpractice, bribery, among others. Therefore they claim that in a bid to ensure the admission of the right qualified students, there Is need to introduce their own screening examination.
Others still justify the Post Ume saying that it a way of selecting from the large pool of students who passed the Jamb cut off.
Despite these claims, other school of thought say that the Post Ume should be scrapped. They argue that the emergence of this second tier examination is driven by the schools' greed for money and an Avenue to increase their Internally generated revenue from the huge fees paid by students in purchasing the forms. This they say is increasing the bottlenecks in securing admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Also it is said that the schools has abused the opportunity by exploiting students through admission racketing, where admission is given to the highest bidder. This has hindered some good and brilliant students from getting admission. This is a mockery of the educational institution.
The call for the scrapping of Post Ume took a new turn recently when the National assembly mandated all tertiary institutions to stop organizing Post Ume henceforth and allow Jamb to solely screen students for admission as required by law. This did not go down well with most schools as some has started the sale of Post Ume despite this directive. On the other hand, students seeking admission are applauding the law makers for taking the giant step and they showed a sign of relieve as this will reduce the cost and stress in getting admission into Nigerian institutions.
It is true that Jamb has greatly improved in their practice and have developed strategy to curb examination malpractice such as the use of ICT. If post Ume is finally scrapped, Jamb should be supported with the needed resources to enable them carry out this function to the expectation of all.
